Monopoly by the Parkers
Monopoly. The board game was first published by Parker Brothers in 1935. This came to mind while I was working on a scorecard recently. Let me explain.
The first world record that I saw live was in a match between Natal B and Zimbabwe Rhodesia B at The Oval in Pietermaritzburg in 1980. Vince Hogg made a duck in 87 minutes for Zimbabwe Rhodesia B, then the longest duck in first-class cricket. He had a last wicket partnership of 64 with EF Parker. The Wisden Book of Cricket Records (back in the days when “the record books” were still a real thing) recorded this in the Monopolising The Scoring section as Parker scoring 100% of the partnership. My recollection is that there were some extras in the partnership so it probably wasn’t 100%. Unfortunately I have not been able to locate a scorebook to prove this either way. In any event it was a significant case of monopolising the scoring by Eddie Parker.
There is one other EF Parker who played first-class cricket. Ernest Parker, who is not related to Eddie and is definitely not his brother, played for Western Australia in their pre-Sheffield Shield days. And he also features in Monopolising The Scoring with an extraordinary innings against Victoria at Perth in 1910. Opening the batting in the second innings, he lost his partner, Harry Howard, for 5 with the total on 82 and was himself dismissed for 117 (in 82 minutes) with the total on 133. I have not found a batter who has been dismissed for a higher score at a lower total in all first-class cricket.
